Ba rton Mill Island is the most downstream of the seven islands of Canterbury. The islands are man made, through the efforts of monks from several centuries earlier establishing water mills on the River Great Stour. Barton Mill Island still has a mill, although it is actually a disued livestock feed depot. There were plans to convert the mill to residential use, with much of the island to be given to Canterbury City Council as a nature reserve. This would probably have been managed by the environmental education centre.
