Grassland areas on the Broad Oak Nature Reserve are managed to encourage a biodiverse flora and fauna of light loving, open ground species. These areas have to be mown every summer to prevent the invasion by hawthorn scrub, being raked off to keep soil fertility low and to encourage flowering plants such as oxeye daisy, centaury, birdsfoot trefoil and hop trefoil.
