Hales Place takes its name from the 'mansion' of that name that once existed close by. During the late 20th Century this large estate of low cost terraced housing and flats was created. The local community is a mixture of social groups, with the relatively affluent St Stephen's area adjacent. Many of the houses are occupied by financially disadvantaged families. One of the UK Government's Sure Start Schemes operates in this area of Canterbury to improve the social, health and educational wellbeing of pre-school aged children living here. It may surprise many peoiple that an apparently affluent settlement like Canterbury actually has areas of social deprivation. Between 2005 and 2013 Sure Start Canterbury will be working with the Canterbury Broad Oak EEC to provide outdoor educational experiences for these children through the centre's "Woodland Voices" scheme.
